Strategic Fund Development

Basic Approach/Concept

q       Commitment of CEO and board to the development program

q       Complete integrity

q       Good business management procedures are absolute necessity

q       Long-range planning

q       Public relations as pre-requisite

q       Invite substantial investments

q       Goals and objective clearly written

q       Negotiate from position of strength

q       A positive attitude is paramount and permanent

q       Publics must be involved with the institution on a continuing basis

Crisis Fundraising

Basic Approach/Concept

q       Panic reactions to negative deficits start process of fundraising

q       Crisis orientation

q       Project-oriented; year-to-year

q       Temporary solutions

q       Limited objectives--short range

q       Shaky, unreliable, insecure

q       Immediate solution demanded

q       Amateur approach; stopgap measures

q       No planned continuing efforts; hit and miss; no long-range plan

q       Band-aid approach

q       Negotiate from position of weakness--"help," "need," "poor," "assist"

q       Rely on gimmicks
